May 22nd will mark the 1-year anniversary of the terrorist attack killed 22 people and injured hundreds more at Ariana Grande‘s concert in Manchester. Although the singer has come a long way since going through that horrific event, the heartache is still incredibly real.
The 24-year-old was asked about making music after the bombing for Time magazine’s Next Generation Leaders issue and she couldn’t help but become overcome with emotion and start sobbing.
Ari said through tears QUOTE “There are so many people who have suffered such loss and pain. The processing part is going to take forever…”
She was unable to finish her thought before getting choked up once again and telling the interview she doesn’t want to talk about the attack.
She explained QUOTE “I don’t want to give it that much power, something so negative. It’s the absolute worst of humanity. That’s why I did my best to react the way I did. The last thing I would ever want is for my fans to see something like that happen and think it won. Music is supposed to be the safest thing in the world. I think that’s why it’s still so heavy on my heart every single day. I wish there was more that I could fix. You think with time it’ll become easier to talk about. Or you’ll make peace with it. But every day I wait for that peace to come and it’s still very painful.”
Ariana wrote her new single “No Tears Left to Cry” about finally getting her feet back on the ground after feeling upside-down for so long. It took awhile, but the music started coming once she started healing.
She added QUOTE “When I started to take care of myself more, then came balance, and freedom, and joy; it poured out into the music. We’ve messed with the idea of not being able to find the ground again, because I feel like I’m finally landing back on my feet now.”
Ari still obviously is incredibly emotional about what happened last May but she ultimately wants fans to know that she’s happy and won’t let it stop her from living her life and honoring those we lost.
I honestly can’t even imagine how hard it must’ve been for Ariana to not only cope with the Manchester attack, but then continue living life in public with everyone’s eyes on her at all times. It’s clear that she’s nowhere near over it, but is leaning on music, friends and family to move forward. How do you feel after hearing that Ariana broke down talking about the attack?
